Five pages of counting to 5 with five frames, the one-row frame that shows how far a number is from 5. Page 1 has frames of dots filled from the left: children count and write how many. Page 2 puts animals in any spaces, so the empty spots fall in different places and children have to count each one. On page 3 children read a number and draw that many dots in the frame. Page 4 matches six frames to the numbers 0 to 5 with lines, and on page 5 children circle the frame with more. Each page starts with a worked example in green.
Start with a five frame on the floor or the board and real counters: put in 3, count them together, then ask "How many empty spots?" Children who see that 3 leaves 2 empty are beginning to see numbers without counting one by one. On page 2, ask children to touch each animal as they count, since the spaces are mixed. On page 3, say "Start at the left" so the dots fill in order.
Draw a five frame on paper and use buttons, cereal or coins as counters. Put some in, ask how many, then ask how many more fill the frame.
