Five pages that build elapsed time one step at a time. Page 1 shows a start clock and an end clock on the hour and half hour: students write both times, then the hours and minutes between them. Page 2 does the same inside one hour, counting by 5 minutes. Page 3 puts each problem on a one-hour time line, where students draw jumps to find an end time or the minutes that passed. Page 4 has two tables, one to find each end time and one to find each start time. Page 5 has six word problems with a.m. and p.m. times, some with two steps.
Model page 3 on the board before handing it out: start at the first time, jump to the next quarter hour, jump by 15 minutes, and finish with a small jump. A geared teaching clock helps on pages 1 and 2, since students can turn the minute hand and watch the hour hand creep toward the next number.
Ask your child how long everyday things take: when does dinner start, when does it end, and how much time was that? Car rides, bedtime routines, and TV shows all make good elapsed time questions.
