Six pages of cooking times on Thanksgiving Day. Page 1 reads the time a dish starts on a clock, to the minute, and adds its cooking time to find when it is done. Page 2 shows an in clock and an out clock and asks how many minutes the dish cooked. On page 3 students draw hops on open time lines, to the next hour first and then the rest, to find when a dish is done or how long it cooked; the answer key draws the hops. Page 4 works backward from dinner at 4:00 p.m. to find when each dish must start, the turkey before noon, then completes a cooking schedule with one blank in each row. Page 5 changes cooking times between hours and minutes, with a two-column table, and page 6 has six multi-step word problems, some across noon. Pages 1 to 3 are 3rd grade time to the minute; pages 4 to 6 add the 4th grade work.
Use a geared teaching clock on the board for pages 1 and 2 and turn the minute hand as the class counts on. Before page 3, model one hop to the next hour and one hop for the rest, and write the minutes over each hop.
Plan a holiday meal or a favorite recipe together: if dinner is at 5:00, when does each dish need to start? Check with the oven clock and a kitchen timer.
