Five pages about seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years. Page 1 has seven time facts, each with a picture (a stopwatch, a clock, a day and a night, a week, a year of months), to finish with the numbers in a number bank. Page 2 asks how long ten everyday things take, like blinking, brushing your teeth or summer break, and students circle the answer that makes sense. On page 3 students compare twelve pairs of times, such as 1 hour and 45 minutes, with >, < or =, using the time facts at the top. Page 4 skip counts: weeks to days by 7s, days to hours by 24s on a number line, and tables for hours to minutes, minutes to seconds and years to months. Page 5 has six word problems and asks students to put the seven units in order from shortest to longest.
Before page 1, time one minute on a clock with a second hand while the class stays quiet, then count how many times the second hand went around in an hour. For page 2, act out a few of the activities: blink, jump rope ten times, pretend to brush your teeth, and ask whether it took seconds, minutes or hours. A class calendar helps on pages 3 and 4 for counting days in a week and weeks in a year.
Talk about how long things take during the day: a sneeze takes a second, a bath takes minutes, a night of sleep takes hours, a trip to grandma might take days. Count the days until a birthday or a holiday on a calendar and turn them into weeks.
