Features

  • 24 cards: every pair of equal fractions with denominators to 12, such as 1/2 = 4/8 and 2/5 = 4/10
  • A missing numerator on most fronts, a missing denominator on every third card
  • The finished equation on the back, the missing number in blue
  • A thick blue frame on every front, so the cards are easy to turn the right way
  • Backs laid out to print double-sided, or the fronts and then the backs on a one-sided printer

Skills Covered

  • Find an equivalent fraction
  • Multiply the top and bottom by the same number
  • Find a missing numerator or denominator
  • See that equal fractions name the same amount
  • Use halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths and twelfths
  • Check an answer on the back

How to Use This Pack

Twenty-four flash cards, eight to a sheet, one for every pair of equal fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12, such as 1/2 = 4/8 and 2/3 = 8/12. Each front shows the equation with one number missing, most often the top of the second fraction; each back shows it finished, the missing number in blue. Print the pack double-sided and flip on the long edge: each back sheet is laid out mirrored, so every card's back lands behind its front. On a printer that prints one side, choose Fronts only under Print, put the printed sheets back in the paper tray, then choose Backs only. Fronts have a thick frame and backs a thin one, so a card turned the wrong way stands out.

In the Classroom

Show a card and ask what the bottom number was multiplied by, then do the same to the top. Partners take turns finding the missing number and turning the card over to check. Fraction strips or a fraction wall help a child see why two fractions are equal.

At Home

Work through a few cards a day. Ask your child to explain each answer: "8 is 2 times 4, so the top is 2 times 1."

Tips for Success

  • Find what the bottom number was multiplied by
  • Multiply the top by the same number
  • For a missing bottom number, start from the tops
  • Equal fractions name the same part of a whole
  • Card stock makes the cards last

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NF.A.3a Know that two fractions are equal when they cover the same amount of a whole or land at the same spot on a number line.
  • 3.NF.A.3b Find and make simple equal fractions, such as 3/6 = 1/2, and use a picture or model to show why they match.
  • 3.NF.A.3c Show a whole number in fraction form and notice when a fraction names a whole number, such as 2 = 2/1 or 8/4 = 2.
  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain with fraction models why multiplying a fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equal fraction; use this to find equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.

Equivalent Fractions Flash Cards

3rd – 4th Grade

Flash cards for equal fractions such as 1/2 = 4/8, with a missing numerator or denominator on the front and the finished equation on the back. Students find the missing number, then turn the card over to check.
