Five pages on equivalent ratios and rates. Page 1 completes ratio tables for recipes, travel, paint, prices and plant growth, some with the columns out of order so students scale both up and down. Page 2 fills in double number lines, then answers a question past the end of each line. Page 3 scales ratios up and down with the × or ÷ written on an arrow, writes ratios as a rate out of 100 and a percent, and circles every ratio equivalent to a given one. Page 4 finds unit rates and unit prices, then uses them. Page 5 finds the unit price of two offers to choose the better buy and solves word problems with ratios, speed and percents.
Start with a recipe on the board: 2 cups of flour for every 3 eggs. Build the ratio table together, doubling, tripling and halving, then draw the same numbers as a double number line. Ask what one egg needs: that is the unit rate. Page 5 is good to talk through: is the bigger package always the better buy?
Look at shelf tags at the grocery store: many show the price per 100 g or per liter. Pick two sizes of the same food and work out which is the better buy. On a car trip, ask how far you go in an hour, then how far in three hours at the same speed.
