  • Build fluency with sums within 5
  • Recognize fact family patterns
  • Strengthen number sense for small numbers
  • Prepare for mental math strategies

How to Use This Worksheet

Each problem shows a fact family triangle with three numbers. Students write all four related equations - two addition and two subtraction. This format helps students see how the same three numbers create a complete fact family.

In the Classroom

Use as an introduction to fact families during a unit on addition and subtraction relationships. The small numbers (within 5) make this ideal for Kindergarteners or early 1st graders who are just learning the concept.

At Home

Start by showing your child how three numbers can make four math facts. Use small objects like blocks or coins to demonstrate - for example, 2 + 3 = 5, 3 + 2 = 5, 5 - 2 = 3, 5 - 3 = 2.

Tips for Success

  • Model the first problem together before independent practice
  • Remind students that the largest number always goes at the top of the triangle
  • Check that students write two addition AND two subtraction facts
  • Use the answer key for self-checking

Common Core Standards Alignment

This worksheet supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.1 - Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, drawings, and equations
  • 1.OA.B.3 - Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract
  • 1.OA.C.6 - Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10

Fact Families Within 5 - Write All

K - 1st 1 worksheet + answer key
