Features

  • Three-part cards for all 25 shapes of the geometric cabinet
  • A control card, a picture card and a name card for every shape
  • One family a page: curved figures, triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons
  • Triangles named by their sides and their angles
  • Big, clear shapes and lower-case names, as on Montessori cards
  • Dashed lines to cut along, and every card the same width
  • Every page in color and in black and white

Skills Covered

  • Name the circle, ellipse, oval, curved triangle and quatrefoil
  • Name triangles by their sides: equilateral, isosceles, scalene
  • Name triangles by their angles: acute, right, obtuse
  • Name the square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, right trapezoid and kite
  • Name the polygons from pentagon to decagon
  • Match a shape to its name, and check the match against a control card

How to Use This Pack

Ten pages of cards, one family of the geometric cabinet a page: the circle, ellipse and oval; the curved triangle and quatrefoil; the acute, right and obtuse triangles; the square and rectangle, the rhombus and parallelogram, and the trapezoid, right trapezoid and kite; and the polygons from pentagon to decagon. On each page the control cards are across the top, the picture cards under them and the name cards at the bottom. Cut along the dashed lines. The control card keeps the picture and the name together; the picture card and the name card are separate.

In the Classroom

Use the cards with the three-part card lesson after the child has handled the insets from the geometric cabinet. Lay the control cards in a column. The child matches each picture card to the control card with the same shape, then reads or sounds out each name card and lays it under its picture. To check, the child compares the pair with the control card above it. Later, the child can work without the control cards and use them only to check, or match the cards to the real insets. A child who is not yet reading can match pictures only while you say the names.

At Home

Print one page, cut the cards apart and play a matching game: lay the control cards face up, then find the picture card that matches each one. Hunt for the shapes around the house, an oval mirror, a rectangle door, a hexagon tile, and say their names.

Tips for Success

  • Print on card stock, or laminate the cards, so they last
  • Print the color pages for the classroom and the black and white pages for children to color
  • Start with only the circle, square and equilateral triangle, then add a family at a time
  • The trapezoid on these cards has exactly one pair of parallel sides
  • Keep each family in its own envelope, labelled with the family name

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
  • K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
  • K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
  • K.G.B.4 Compare flat and solid shapes of any size or position, using everyday words for their sides, corners and other features.
  • 1.G.A.1 Separate the features that define a shape (three sides) from ones that do not (color, size, turn), and build or draw shapes with them.
  • 2.G.A.1 Draw and spot shapes with given features, like a number of angles or faces, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
