Skills Covered

  • Tell odd and even numbers apart
  • Find multiples of a number
  • Compare numbers: greater than, less than, between
  • Use two rules at once, like odd and greater than 10
  • Follow multi-step directions
  • Fine motor control while coloring

How to Use This Pack

Each page has two or three color rules at the top, like "Color the multiples of 4 black." Students check every number against the rules, color the spaces that fit, and leave the rest white. When every rule is followed, a picture appears: a witch hat, a bat, a haunted house, a jack-o'-lantern, and a ghost. Students write the name of the picture at the bottom. The pictures are drawn on honeycomb hexagons, rows of dots, and a triangle mosaic.

In the Classroom

A calm activity for the days around Halloween that still practices number sense. Before starting, list the first few multiples or the numbers between two numbers on the board. The answer keys shade each color in its own strength of blue, so checking is quick.

At Home

Have crayons ready in each color named on the page. Ask your child to say why a number fits a rule before coloring it, like "36 is a multiple of 4 because 4 × 9 = 36."

Tips for Success

  • Work one rule at a time: color every space for the first rule, then the next
  • "Between 10 and 20" means 11 to 19
  • A number that fits no rule stays white
  • Guess the picture early if you like, but keep checking every number
