About November
In much of North America and Europe, November is the month of the harvest, falling leaves, acorns and turkeys. These pages use those things and no holiday, so they suit any day of the month in any school.
How to Use This Pack
Six pages that build from kindergarten to 2nd grade. Page 1 hides stars, hearts, triangles and circles on a cornucopia: find each one, color a box on the graph for it, and write how many. Page 2 has six groups of fall pictures to count, set out in rows of five. Page 3 is a turkey to color by code: every space holds an adding or subtracting fact within 10, and the color key at the top gives the color for each answer. Page 4 is a November calendar to fill in: find the day November 1 falls on this year, write 1 there and fill in the rest, then answer five questions. Page 5 is a sunflower to color by code with facts within 20. Page 6 has five story problems, three within 20 and two within 100.
In the Classroom
Page 4 fits calendar time on the first school day of November: find the 1st on a real calendar together, then let children write the dates. The color-by-code pages make good morning work or a math center. In the color copy the circles in the color key are filled in for children who cannot read the color words yet; in the black-and-white copy, children can color each circle first.
At Home
On a walk, count leaves, acorns or pinecones and see which you found the most of. Ask your child what day it is today, what day it was yesterday and what day it will be tomorrow, and count the days left in November together.
Tips for Success
Solve the problem first, then find its answer in the color key
A small space shows the answer itself: find it in the key
Make a mark on each shape as you count it
On the calendar, start at 1 and count on day by day
This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:
K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
K.OA.A.2 Solve story problems and add or subtract with totals up to 10, modeling them with objects or drawings.
K.MD.B.3 Sort objects into named groups, count each group (up to 10), and order the groups by how many they hold.
K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
1.OA.A.1 Solve story problems up to 20 that join, separate, combine or compare amounts, with the missing number in any spot, using objects, drawings or equations.
1.OA.A.2 Solve story problems where three numbers are added together for a total of 20 or less.
1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
1.MD.C.4 Sort and show data in up to three groups, then answer questions about the total, each group's count, and how groups differ.
2.OA.A.1 Solve one- and two-step story problems with sums and differences up to 100, with the unknown in any position, using drawings and equations.
2.OA.B.2 Add and subtract to 20 quickly using strategies done in the head, and by year's end instantly recall every sum of two single-digit numbers.
2.MD.D.10 Make picture and bar graphs (one unit per square or picture) for up to four categories, and answer joining, separating and comparing questions from them.
2.G.A.1 Draw and spot shapes with given features, like a number of angles or faces, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
Mixed math practice for November, with turkeys, the harvest, fall leaves and acorns and no holiday on any page. Children find and graph hidden shapes, count harvest groups, color by code with addition and subtraction facts, fill in the month's calendar and solve November story problems.
