Five crossword puzzles, a phonics pattern a page: digraphs (shell, chick), beginning blends (crab, swing), silent e (kite, cone), vowel teams (chain, soap) and r-controlled vowels (harp, star). Each puzzle has six words with pictures for clues, numbered under Across and Down, and a word bank. Children name each picture, find its word in the bank and write it in the boxes; each puzzle fits its bank one way only.
Hand out the page for the pattern you are teaching, or use the set as a review after the phonics unit. Ask children to underline the pattern's letters in each word of the bank before they start: sh, the blend, the vowel and its e, the team or the vowel and r.
Read the word bank with your child and ask which letters make the special sound in each word. Then let them match the words to the pictures.
