Nine pages on r-controlled vowels, a vowel followed by an r that changes its sound: ar as in car, or as in fork, and er, ir and ur, three spellings of one sound, as in fern, bird and purse. Children circle the letters that spell each picture's sound, sort pictures by sound and er, ir and ur words by spelling, and write words from a word bank with the vowel and its r in one box. Then they circle the word that names a picture (shirt, not short or shot), read and match, build words from letter tiles, follow the or words through a maze and play roll and read.
Call the r a bossy r: it changes the vowel in front of it, so car does not say c-a-r. Read cat and cart, bid and bird side by side and listen to the vowel change. The word sort helps with the hardest part, that er, ir and ur all sound the same and each word's spelling has to be learned.
Play I Spy with r sounds: "I spy something that has ar, like car" (a jar, a star, a yard). Write the word together and circle the vowel and its r.
R-controlled vowel worksheets for ar, or, er, ir and ur, where an r after a vowel changes its sound, as in car, fork, fern, bird and purse. Children circle and sort by sound, sort er, ir and ur words by spelling, write and build words a sound a box, and play a maze and roll and read.
