Ten pages on beginning blends, two consonants side by side where you hear both sounds: the l blends (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl), the r blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr) and the s blends (sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw). Children circle the two letters a picture starts with, write the missing blends, and sort pictures by l, r and s blends. Then they read words and match them to pictures, circle the right word (crab, not cab or grab), build words from letter tiles, follow the r blend words through a maze and play roll and read.
Stretch a blend slowly before the page: f-r-og, then say it faster until the two sounds run together. On the circle the word page, read the wrong words aloud too, so children hear that cab has lost a sound.
Look for blends on a walk or at the store: a flag, a tree, a snail, a stop sign. Say each word slowly and listen for the two sounds at the start.
Beginning blend worksheets for words that start with two consonants, each with its own sound, like the fr in frog and the st in stamp. Children circle and write l, r and s blends, sort pictures, read words like crab and sled, and play a maze and roll and read.
