Eight cut and glue pages, each with two, three or five letter trays at the top and picture cards to cut out at the bottom. Children say each picture's name, listen for its first sound and glue the card under the letter that makes it. The pages go s and m, t and b, c, f and p, d, g and h, l, r and n, k, w and j, v, y and z, and last the short vowels a, e, i, o and u. Letters that share a sound, like c and k, are never on the same page. The answer keys show every card in its tray with its name.
Name the pictures together first, then let children sort the cards on their desks before gluing, so they can move a card that is in the wrong tray. A pocket chart with the same letters makes a good whole-class sort before the page.
Cut out the cards together and say each name, stretching out the first sound. Sort them on the table first, then glue them down.
Cut and glue sorting pages for beginning sounds, with picture cards and a tray for each letter. Children say each picture's name, listen for its first sound and glue it under the letter that makes it.
