Eight pages that link letters to the first sound of a word. On the first two, each row has a letter and three pictures to circle the one that starts with it. The next two have twelve pictures, each with a box to write the letter it starts with. Then two pages to draw a line from each picture to its letter, and two to circle the letter a picture starts with. No words are printed, so children listen for the sound; the answer keys name every picture for the grown-up reading them out.
Name each picture together before children start, stretching the first sound: mmmoon. Play I Spy with first sounds as a warm-up. The write pages work well in small groups, where the teacher can hear each child say the sound.
Say each picture's name with your child, making the first sound long. Then take turns finding things around the house that start with the same sound.
