Six color by code pictures with letters in place of numbers. Each space of the picture holds a letter, and the color key across the top shows a picture beside each color. Children say the key picture's name, listen for its first sound and color every space with that letter: if the key shows a sun beside red, the s spaces are red. One page has the short vowels on its own (apple, egg, igloo, octopus and umbrella). The key pictures stay plain line art, so a red apple never sits beside a blue swatch. Every page comes in color, with colored circles in the key for children who do not read color words yet, and in black and white, with empty circles to color first.
Name the key pictures together before children start, and say each first sound: sun, sss. Children who know their letters can then work alone. Use the black-and-white copy and have children color each key circle first.
Say each key picture's name with your child and ask which letter it starts with. Then find that letter in the picture together before coloring.
