Eight I Spy scenes that send children hunting for first sounds. On the first four, each scene has one letter: children say each picture's name, circle every picture that starts with the letter and write how many they found. The last four have two letters, and children count the pictures for each. The pictures repeat, so a scene might hold three suns and three socks for s. No words are printed, so children listen for the sound; the answer keys ring every picture, mark its letter and name them all.
Play I Spy aloud first: I spy something that starts with sss. Then hand out the page for a letter you are working on. On the two letter pages, children can circle one letter's pictures and put a box round the other's.
Take turns saying a picture's name and its first sound. Then play I Spy around the house with the same letter.
Busy I Spy scenes full of pictures, where children hunt for the ones that start with a letter's sound. They say each picture's name, circle the ones that start with the letter and count how many they found.
