Five pages on the quarter hours. Page 1 starts with four clocks shaded from the 12 to the minute hand, so students see a quarter, a half and three quarters of the hour gone; then each clock has two names to choose from. Page 2 has a word bank and eight clocks to write two ways, on a digital clock and in words. Page 3 turns it around: draw the hands for twelve times in words. Page 4 matches times in words to digital clocks, then asks who is right about three times, like 4:45, which is quarter to 5, not quarter to 4. Page 5 has six short stories with a time in words to show on a clock and a digital clock.
Fold a paper plate in half and then in half again, and color one quarter: that is quarter past. Move the minute hand round the plate together, naming each quarter. Spend time on quarter to: the hour hand is almost at the next number, so quarter to 5 is 4:45.
Ask your child to call out the time in words when the clock shows a quarter hour: "It is quarter past 7, time for breakfast." On a digital clock, ask what 8:45 is called, and why it says 8 but is quarter to 9.
