Five crossword puzzles, a short vowel a page: short a, then e, i, o and u. Each puzzle has six words with pictures for clues, numbered under Across and Down. There is no word bank, so children say each picture's name, listen for its sounds and spell it in the boxes. Every picture is one children name the same way, and where two words cross they share a letter, which helps them check.
Use the page for the vowel you are teaching that week. Name the pictures together first so everyone uses the same word, then let children stretch out each sound as they write. Count the boxes together: a picture's word has that many letters.
Say each picture's name slowly with your child. If a word does not fit, check the crossing letters together.
