Five pages built on the teen board, read aloud to the child. On the board every panel shows a printed 10, and the unit cards 1 to 9 slide over its 0: the 6 card over the 0 of 10 makes 16. Beside each number the child lays the quantity, a golden ten bar and the bead bar of the bead stair that goes with it. Page 1 shows the beads: the child counts them and writes the unit card that makes the number. Page 2 turns it round: the board shows a number, and the child circles the one bead bar of three that goes with the ten bar to make it. Page 3 has the child finish sentences such as "10 and 6 make 16", some from the beads and some from the board. Page 4 is the whole board, 11 to 19, with beads beside each panel: the child writes the cards that are missing and draws the bars that are missing. Page 5 counts up and down a bead stair of teens, writing the missing numbers, then asks for one more and one less, from 19 and one more, which makes two tens, to 11 and one less, which leaves one ten.
Use the pages after the child has worked with the real teen board and the beads: slid the cards over the 0, built each quantity with a golden ten bar and a colored bar and named it in a three-period lesson ("This is ten and three. This is thirteen."). Keep the board and the beads at the table so a child who is unsure can build the number, lay the bars on the page and check. The bead bars are their own control of error: a bar that does not go with the card shows at once when the beads are counted. On page 5, have the child add one unit bead to 19 and see that ten units make another ten bar.
Make a ten from ten buttons or dry beans in a small cup, and add a few loose ones beside it: "Ten and four. Fourteen." Write the number on a card. Then make a 10 card and a set of cards 1 to 9 from paper, and slide a small card over the 0 to make each teen number together.

The Montessori teen board, where a unit card slides over the 0 of a printed 10 to make 11 to 19, with a golden ten bar and a bead bar laid beside each number. Children count the beads to find the card, match a number to its bead bar, finish "10 and 6 make 16" sentences, fill in the whole board and count on and back through the teens.
