One page to give on the first day of the unit on tens and ones, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: a teen number as a ten and some ones, circling groups of ten, counting by tens, base-ten blocks, comparing numbers to 20 with >, < and =, and putting three numbers in order. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet see 13 as a ten and 3 ones needs ten frames and bundles of ten in hand for the first lessons, and one who mixes up > and < needs comparing practice with small numbers first. The questions are the unit's easiest, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on tens and ones starts: count out 13 or 17 small things, make a group of ten, and ask how many tens and how many ones there are.

A check to give before the unit on tens and ones, on what the unit builds on. Students write a teen number as a ten and ones, circle groups of ten, count by tens, read base-ten blocks, and compare and order numbers to 20.
