How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on tens and ones, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, with base-ten blocks on the tables. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Question 12 (number words to 100) is taught in 1st grade in Florida and Oklahoma: skip it if your class does not learn it. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Count a pile of small things by making groups of ten, and ask your child how many tens and how many ones there are.

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Keep base-ten blocks or bundles of straws out
  • Ask "how many tens?" before "how many ones?"
  • When comparing, look at the tens first
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.NBT.A.1 Count up to 120 from any starting number, and read, write and use numerals up to 120 to show how many objects.
  • 1.NBT.B.2a See a group of ten ones as one unit called a ten.
  • 1.NBT.B.2b Know that 11 through 19 are each made of one ten plus 1 to 9 ones.
  • 1.NBT.B.2c Know that 10, 20, 30 and so on up to 90 mean 1 to 9 tens with no ones.
  • 1.NBT.B.3 Compare two-digit numbers by looking at their tens and ones, and write the result with >, = or <.
  • 2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers up to 1,000 as digits, in words, and in expanded form (like 300 + 40 + 7).
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
