How to Use This Pack

Twelve lesson plans, one for each lesson of a unit on tens and ones, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the twelve lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lesson 7.6 (number words to 100) is for the states that teach it in 1st grade.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Bundles of ten straws or snap cubes in trains of ten work as well as base-ten blocks.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Keep bundles of ten and base-ten blocks on the tables for the whole unit
  • Ask "how many tens?" before "how many ones?"
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.NBT.A.1 Count up to 120 from any starting number, and read, write and use numerals up to 120 to show how many objects.
  • 1.NBT.B.2a See a group of ten ones as one unit called a ten.
  • 1.NBT.B.2b Know that 11 through 19 are each made of one ten plus 1 to 9 ones.
  • 1.NBT.B.2c Know that 10, 20, 30 and so on up to 90 mean 1 to 9 tens with no ones.
  • 1.NBT.B.3 Compare two-digit numbers by looking at their tens and ones, and write the result with >, = or <.
  • 2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers up to 1,000 as digits, in words, and in expanded form (like 300 + 40 + 7).
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.

1st Grade Place Value Lesson Plans

Lesson plans for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on tens and ones, one page a lesson, with a unit overview that lays the unit out day by day. Each one ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers, tools and quiz for that lesson. Lessons: ten ones make a ten, teen numbers and decade numbers as tens and ones, tens and ones to 100, expanded form, one number shown many ways, comparing with base-ten blocks and with >, < and =, ordering numbers to 120, numbers on a number line and sorting numbers in Venn diagrams, with number words to 100 for the states that teach them in 1st grade.
