How to Use This Pack

Five pages for reading and writing the number words from zero to twenty. Number words are part of reading and writing numbers in 1st grade, and many states name them: Florida asks 1st graders to read numbers written in word form, and Oklahoma to read and write numbers with words. On page 1 students draw a line from each number, 0 to 10, to its word. Page 2 has the numbers 11 to 20, each with a full ten frame and a ten frame of ones, and a word bank of the ten words; students write the word on the line. On page 3 they count apples, turtles, strawberries, owls, lions and butterflies set out in ten frames, write the number in the box and the word on the line. Page 4 turns it around: read a number word, then color that many boxes of a double ten frame. Page 5 has three sets of four number words to write in order from least to greatest, then the word for one more or one less than a number word. Each page starts with a worked example.

In the Classroom

Before page 2, write the teen words on the board and underline the "teen" in each: fourteen is four and ten, sixteen is six and ten. Point out the three that do not follow the pattern (eleven, twelve and fifteen, where five turns into "fif"). On page 4, have students color the first ten frame full before they start the second one, so a teen number always looks like ten and some more. Page 5 works well with number cards: turn each word into a number first, put the numbers in order, then copy the words.

At Home

Hunt for number words on cereal boxes, in picture books and on signs. Write a number word on a sticky note and ask your child to bring you that many spoons or toy cars. Take turns: one of you says a number, the other writes its word.

Tips for Success

  • Most teen words are a ones word plus "teen": six and teen make sixteen
  • Eleven, twelve, thirteen and fifteen are the tricky ones: practice them most
  • A teen number is one full ten frame and some more
  • Say the number out loud before writing its word
  • Use the word bank to check your spelling
