How to Use This Pack

Twelve lesson plans, one for each lesson of a Kindergarten unit on numbers 11 to 20, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the twelve lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 35 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching on the rug, 5 minutes together, 10 minutes of practice and an exit ticket you read aloud. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 9.7 to 9.12 (compare to 20, one more and one less, the number line, counting back from 20, number words and numbers to 30) are for the states that teach them in Kindergarten.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson with an egg carton cut down to ten cups and small things to fill it, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it: 16 is 10 and 6. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while children work
  • Say teen numbers as 10 and some more: 16 is 10 and 6
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.1 Say the numbers in order up to 100, counting by 1s and also by 10s.
  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4c Know that each next number in the count stands for a group with one more object.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
  • K.NBT.A.1 Build and break apart 11 to 19 as ten ones plus more ones, recording with drawings or equations like 14 = 10 + 4.
  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.NBT.B.3 Compare two-digit numbers by looking at their tens and ones, and write the result with >, = or <.
