Five pages of counting backward. Page 1 has three rocket countdowns to 0, from 10, 9 and 7, with some numbers to fill in and fewer given each time. On page 2 a ten frame loses one dot at a time: the first number is given, and children count the dots and write the rest, seeing that each step back is one less. Page 3 has number paths counting back from different numbers up to 10, and page 4 counts back from 20 and from the teens, some paths going past 10. Page 5 shows number lines from 0 to 20 with hops back from a start number; children write the numbers in the boxes under the line. Pages 3 to 5 start with a worked example.
Count down together before you start: crouch low at 10 and jump up at 0 like a rocket. Start the countdown from other numbers too (7, 13, 20) so children do not always begin at 10. On page 2, let children cover one dot at a time with a counter. Read the directions aloud and do each page's example together.
Count down while you wait: before a timer rings, before a race starts, or step by step going downstairs. Start at different numbers, and take turns saying the next number back.
