How to Use This Pack

Seven pages for one Kindergarten unit on numbers 11 to 20. Page 1 is a pre-check to give before the unit, to see what children already know. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test, with a tip on every question. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different pictures and numbers, for a retake or a child who was away. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Count on. Write the next two numbers."

In the Classroom

Give the test to a small group at a table, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Questions 7 to 12, all of page 2 (compare to 20, one more and one less, the number line, counting back from 20, number words, numbers to 30), are taught in Kindergarten in some states only: give only the ones your class learns, or leave page 2 out and score out of 6. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Read each question aloud and let your child point and count out loud.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling, writing a number or drawing a line
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Teen numbers start with a 1 for the ten: watch for 61 written for 16
  • A full ten frame is 10: children who count on from 10 are ready for the teen number questions
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.1 Say the numbers in order up to 100, counting by 1s and also by 10s.
  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4c Know that each next number in the count stands for a group with one more object.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
  • K.NBT.A.1 Build and break apart 11 to 19 as ten ones plus more ones, recording with drawings or equations like 14 = 10 + 4.
  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.NBT.B.3 Compare two-digit numbers by looking at their tens and ones, and write the result with >, = or <.

Kindergarten Numbers 11 to 20 Test

Kindergarten

A unit test for numbers 11 to 20 in Kindergarten, made to be read aloud: a one-page pre-check, a two-page review with a tip on every question, and the unit test in two forms (A and B) that ask the same questions with different pictures and numbers. Children count on to 20, count 11 to 20 things in rows, trace and write 11 to 20, and show a teen number as 10 and some more ones with ten frames, base-ten blocks and a number bond. The six questions on page 2 of each test (compare to 20, one more and one less, the number line, counting back from 20, number words zero to ten, and numbers to 30) are for the states that teach them. A small picture beside each question number lets the teacher say "find the sun." Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question.
