How to Use This Pack

Eight lesson plans, one for each lesson of a Kindergarten unit on counting to 100, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eight lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers and tools for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 35 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching on the rug, 5 minutes together, 10 minutes of practice and an exit ticket you read aloud. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lesson 10.8 (showing 100 as ten tens) can move to the 100th day of school. Lesson 10.7 (counting a big group by tens and ones) is for the states that teach it in Kindergarten.

At Home

Teaching at home? Count to 100 together on walks and in the car, by ones and by tens, and use the warm up and the "Try it together" step with cubes, beans or cereal in groups of ten. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while children count
  • Count out loud every day, by ones and by tens, pointing to a big hundreds chart
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.1 Say the numbers in order up to 100, counting by 1s and also by 10s.
  • K.CC.A.2 Keep counting upward from a number other than 1, within the numbers already known.
  • 1.NBT.A.1 Count up to 120 from any starting number, and read, write and use numerals up to 120 to show how many objects.
