One page to give before the first lesson of the unit on counting to 100, to see what children already know. Read each of its five questions aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Count by tens." Children count by tens and write the missing numbers, count by ones in the forties, count on from 23, count on from 38 over the next ten, and fill in a piece of the hundreds chart. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check to a small group at a table before the first lesson, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Then sort the children by what they missed: a child who cannot yet count by tens needs to count bundles or full ten frames in the first lessons, and one who stops at a ten ("thirty-nine, thirty-ten") needs to count over the tens on a hundreds chart. A low score at the start is no surprise; it shows where to begin.
Use it to see what your child knows before the unit on counting to 100 starts. Read each question aloud and let your child count out loud, pointing to each box.
