Five pages about two kinds of Venn diagram that most sorting pages skip: one circle inside another, for a group that belongs to a bigger group, and two circles apart, for groups that share nothing. Page 1 cuts and glues pictures into Birds inside Animals, with a bat and a rubber duck to think about. Page 2 sorts Fruits and Vegetables into two circles that never touch. Page 3 sorts numbers into Count by 10s inside Count by 5s, and page 4 into Less Than 10 and Greater Than 20. Page 5 checks which diagram fits nine pairs of groups.
Start with page 1 on the board. Ask: is every bird an animal? Is every animal a bird? That is why the Birds circle sits inside the Animals circle. Then ask whether anything can be a fruit and a vegetable at the same time, and show that the circles on page 2 do not overlap. Page 5 works well as a whole-class vote before students check their own answers.
Name two groups and ask your child to draw them: dogs and pets, cats and dogs, or red things and toys. Do the circles overlap, does one go inside the other, or do they stay apart?
