Five pages that move from sorting numbers to thinking about how they were sorted. Pages 1 and 2 sort twelve numbers from a number bank into a two-circle Venn diagram, with the first number done as an example, then ask two counting questions. Page 3 shows two diagrams that are already sorted but have lost their labels: students choose each label from a bank. Page 4 has three numbers in the wrong part to cross out and write where they belong. Page 5 reads a sorted diagram to answer six questions, ending with a number students make up themselves.
Model page 1 with the example number: is 14 even? Is it greater than 10? Yes and yes, so it goes in the middle. Then let students sort on their own, crossing off each number in the bank as they go. Page 3 is a good partner page: one student reads the numbers in a circle aloud, the other names what they have in common.
Say a number and ask two questions about it, like "Is it even? Is it more than 10?" Then ask where it would go in the Venn diagram. Take turns making up rules and guessing each other's.
