Skills Covered

  • Tell which is longer and which is shorter
  • Order three things by length
  • Compare two lengths with a string
  • Measure with no gaps and no overlaps
  • Measure with cubes and paper clips
  • Know a bigger unit gives a smaller count
  • Measure with an inch ruler
  • Compare weight and capacity

How to Use This Pack

Eight lesson plans, one for each lesson of a unit on measuring length, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eight lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 8.7 and 8.8 (the inch ruler, and weight and capacity) are for the states that teach them in 1st grade.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, with spoons, pencils and blocks from around the house, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Tape a start line on every desk for the whole unit, and ask for the ends lined up every time
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.MD.A.1 Name the features of an object that can be measured, such as how long or how heavy it is, including several for one object.
  • K.MD.A.2 Put two objects side by side to see which is longer, taller, heavier and so on, and describe the difference.
  • 1.MD.A.1 Put three objects in order from longest to shortest, and compare two lengths by checking each against a third object.
  • 1.MD.A.2 Measure an object by lining up equal-size units (like cubes) along it without spaces or overlapping, and give the whole-number count.
  • 2.MD.A.1 Choose a suitable tool, such as a ruler, yardstick, meter stick or tape measure, and use it to measure length.
  • 2.MD.A.2 Measure one object with two different units, such as inches and centimeters, and explain why a smaller unit gives a bigger number.
  • 2.MD.D.9 Measure several objects, or one object several times, in whole units and display the results on a line plot.

1st Grade Measuring Length Lesson Plans

Lesson plans for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on measuring length, one page a lesson, with a unit overview that lays the unit out day by day. Each plan has the goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready, the words to use, a 45 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, exit ticket), questions to ask, the mistakes students make and what to do about them, and ideas for students who need help or are ready for more. Each one ends with the Animal Math worksheets, tools and quiz for that lesson. Lessons: longer and shorter, ordering three things by length, comparing two lengths with a string, measuring with no gaps and no overlaps, measuring with cubes and paper clips, and why a bigger unit gives a smaller count, then the inch ruler and comparing weight and capacity for the states that teach them in 1st grade.
