Skills Covered

  • Compare the weight of two objects
  • Use the words heavier, lighter, and the same
  • Read a balance scale: the heavier side goes down
  • Know that bigger is not always heavier
  • Measure weight by counting same-size blocks
  • Decide if a sentence about weight is true or false

How to Use This Pack

Five pages about weight on a two-pan balance scale. On pages 1 and 2 each scale tips toward the heavier side: students circle the heavier thing, then the lighter one. Page 3 adds level scales, and students circle heavier, lighter, or same for the small picture. On page 4 every scale is level, so students count the blocks on one side to find what the thing on the other side weighs. Page 5, for 1st grade, has six sentences such as "The turtle weighs more than 5 blocks." to check against the scale.

In the Classroom

Start with a real balance or a ruler laid over a pencil: put a book on one side and a crayon on the other and ask which side went down. Then hold two things, one in each hand, and let students guess before the scale shows them. A balloon and a small rock make a good surprise: the big one is not the heavy one.

At Home

Hold two things from the kitchen, one in each hand, and ask which one is heavier. Then make a hanger balance with two bags and check the guess. Read the sentences on page 5 aloud together.

Tips for Success

  • The heavier side goes down; the lighter side goes up
  • A level scale means both sides weigh the same
  • Bigger is not always heavier: look at the scale, not the size
  • Count the blocks one at a time and touch each one
  • On page 5, count the blocks first, then read the sentence

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.MD.A.1 Name the features of an object that can be measured, such as how long or how heavy it is, including several for one object.
  • K.MD.A.2 Put two objects side by side to see which is longer, taller, heavier and so on, and describe the difference.

Heavier or Lighter?

K – 1st Grade

A 5-page weight pack for kindergarten and 1st grade with a two-pan balance scale. Circle the heavier thing, then the lighter one, on scales that tip toward the heavier side. Say whether a thing is heavier, lighter, or the same when some scales are level. Count the blocks that balance an apple, a duck, or a watermelon, and circle TRUE or FALSE for sentences like “The duck weighs less than 6 blocks.” Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
