How to Use This Pack

Five pages about capacity, how much a container holds. Page 1 shows six pairs of containers, like a cup and a bucket or a bathtub and a sink, and children circle the one that holds more. Page 2 asks for the one that holds less. On page 3 the same glass, jar, fish tank and pitcher are drawn full, half full and empty, and children circle the word that fits. Page 4 shows how many cups of water fill each container; children count the cups and write the number. On page 5 they write 1, 2 and 3 under three containers, from the one that holds the least to the one that holds the most. The first row is a worked example.

In the Classroom

Start at a water table or with dry rice: fill a cup and pour it into a bowl, and ask which holds more. Fill a clear cup all the way, halfway and not at all to show full, half full and empty before page 3. For page 4, pour cups of water into a pitcher together and count them out loud.

At Home

At bath time or in the kitchen, ask which holds more: the cup or the pot, the spoon or the bowl? Pour water from a cup into a bigger container and count the cups it takes to fill it.

Tips for Success

  • Read each page aloud: holds more, holds less, full, half full, empty
  • A bigger container can hold more water
  • Half full means the water comes up to the middle
  • On page 4, touch each cup as you count it
  • On page 5, find the one that holds the least first and write 1 under it
