A turkey trot is a fun run or race held on Thanksgiving morning in many American towns. On these pages a turkey does the trotting, one hop at a time along a number line.
Six pages of number line practice with a hopping turkey. Page 1 starts at the turkey and counts on or back by ones to find where it lands, page 2 writes the number sentence for hops already drawn and then draws hops to solve, page 3 skip counts hops of 2, 5 and 10, page 4 fills in the missing numbers on number lines to 120, page 5 is a three-turkey race with number sentences and comparing, and page 6 adds and subtracts two-digit numbers on open number lines, tens first and then ones.
Tape a number line to the floor and let students be the turkey: hop forward to add, turn around and hop back to subtract. Page 5 makes a good partner race: each partner reads one lane aloud while the other checks the hops.
Draw a number line with chalk on the sidewalk and take turns hopping the turkey's moves. Ask: if you hop 3 more, where will you land?
