Five pages of word problems built on two-circle Venn diagrams that show counts instead of names. Pages 1 and 2 each read two survey diagrams (pets, after-school clubs, fruit, summer fun) and answer four questions about each one. Page 3 sorts twelve children from a table into a Venn diagram by name, then counts. Page 4 turns three short stories into Venn diagrams, with the first one worked as an example. Page 5 finds the missing part of four diagrams from the total.
Before page 1, survey the class with two yes-or-no questions (Do you have a dog? Do you have a cat?) and build a Venn diagram on the board with counts. Point out that the number in the middle belongs to both circles, so "How many have a dog?" adds the left part and the middle. Page 4 is a good place to model thinking aloud: start with the middle, then work out each side.
Ask your family two questions, like "Do you like pancakes? Do you like waffles?" and draw a Venn diagram with everyone's name. Then count each part together and make up a question about it.
