Seven pages for one unit on story problems within 100. Page 1 is a pre-check to give before the unit, on what it builds on: 1st grade stories within 20, adding and subtracting two-digit numbers, number bonds, missing numbers, and + or − to make a number sentence true. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same kinds of story in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 11 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. For most stories students write a number sentence, with + or − in the circle, and the answer with its unit.
Give the pre-check on the first day of the unit and sort the class by what they missed. Do the review the day before the test, reading the stories aloud. On the test, read each story aloud for students who are still learning to read; the math is what is being checked. Question 11 (writing a story for a number sentence) is taught in 2nd grade in some states: leave it out if your class does not learn it and score out of 10. Give credit for any story that matches the number sentence and asks a question. The keys show one number sentence for each story; any sentence that fits the story is right (79 − 34 = 45 as well as 34 + 45 = 79, and the steps of a two-step story in either order). The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.
Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Read each story together, and ask your child to tell it back in their own words before solving it: do more come, do some go away, or are we comparing?
