One page to give on the first day of the unit on story problems within 100, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: an add to story and a compare story within 20 from 1st grade, adding and subtracting two-digit numbers in columns, + or − to make a number sentence true, number bonds and missing numbers. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the stories within 20 needs to act stories out or draw them before the bigger numbers, and one who misses the columns needs more time with the adding and subtracting of Units 4 and 5. Read the two stories aloud for students who are still learning to read. A low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on story problems starts: tell small stories together (8 apples, then 7 more) and ask your child to say whether more come, some go away, or you are comparing.

A check to give before the unit on story problems within 100, on what the unit builds on. Students solve an add to story and a compare story within 20, add and subtract two-digit numbers in columns, write + or − to make a number sentence true, fill in number bonds and find missing numbers.
