How to Use This Pack

Nine exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on story problems within 100, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students solve two short story problems, writing a number sentence or filling in a model and the answer with its label, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Read the stories aloud for students who are still learning to read; the math is what is being checked. A number sentence written another way is right when it fits the story (27 + 34 = 61 for a how many more story, for example). Ticket 6.9 is for the states that teach writing a story for a number sentence in 2nd grade; skip it if your class does not. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing story problems together. Read the story aloud, ask your child to tell it back in their own words, and then to show you how they solved it.

Tips for Success

  • Read each story twice: once to picture it, once to find the question
  • Ask: do more come, do some go away, or are we comparing?
  • A bar model shows the parts and the whole before any adding
  • In a two-step story, the answer to step 1 is a number in step 2
  • Check that every answer has its label, like 37 stickers
