Four winter pictures to color by code. Every space holds an adding or subtracting problem within 10: children solve it, find the answer in the color key at the top, and color the space that color. Some colors have two answers. Pages 1 and 2 add (a snow globe, then a knit hat and mittens), pages 3 and 4 subtract (a snowman and a snowy cabin at night). Each page comes in color, with colored circles in the key for children who cannot read the color words yet, and in black and white, with empty circles to color first.
Do the first few spaces together, saying the problem aloud and finding its answer in the key. Counters or fingers help with the subtracting pages. A calm activity for a snowy day or indoor recess, with nothing from any holiday on the pages.
Let your child solve a problem, then color it, so the picture grows bit by bit. Count on from the bigger number to add, and count back to take away.
