How to Use This Pack

Twelve exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on addition strategies to 20, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two or three questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Many questions show the strategy as well as the sum (the numbers counted on, the double used, the ten made first), so look at the work as well as the answer. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a strategy together. Read the questions aloud, and ask your child to say how they found each sum.

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Watch for students who count on from the first number instead of the bigger one
  • Ask students to say the double they used on the near doubles ticket
  • Keep a double ten frame on the desk for making a ten
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.3 Break a number up to 10 into two parts several ways, recording each as a picture or equation (7 = 3 + 4).
  • K.OA.A.4 For a number from 1 to 9, find the partner that adds with it to 10, and show it in a picture or number sentence.
  • 1.OA.A.2 Solve story problems where three numbers are added together for a total of 20 or less.
  • 1.OA.B.3 Use the order and grouping rules of addition as shortcuts, for example knowing 5 + 9 gives the same answer as 9 + 5.
  • 1.OA.B.4 Treat subtraction as finding a missing addend: to solve 12 - 9, ask what added to 9 makes 12.
  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 1.OA.D.7 Know the equal sign means both sides have the same value, and decide whether addition and subtraction equations hold true.
  • 1.OA.D.8 Solve for the missing number in adding or subtracting equations like 9 + ? = 15 or ? - 4 = 6.

1st Grade Addition Strategies Exit Tickets

1st Grade

Exit tickets for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on addition strategies to 20: one page a lesson, with the same ticket four times to copy and cut apart. Each ticket has two or three quick questions and ends with an "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves. Students count on from the bigger number, write turn-around facts, add zero and tell whether a sentence is true, add doubles and near doubles, make a ten to add, fill in number bonds to 20, add three numbers, find ways to make 20, answer facts to 20, add the same number again and solve number puzzles. Answer keys for every ticket.
