Skills Covered

  • Count the sides and corners of flat shapes
  • Tell a triangle from shapes that only look like one
  • Draw a shape from clues; find square corners
  • Solid shapes that roll and stack; blocks in a build
  • Put two flat shapes together to make a bigger one
  • Tell equal shares from shares that are not equal
  • Cut shapes into halves and fourths (quarters)
  • More equal shares make smaller shares; sharing stories

How to Use This Pack

Eleven exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on shapes and equal shares, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two quick questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. When students cut a shape into halves or fourths, any way that makes equal shares is right, not only the one the key shows. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Read the questions aloud, and look for shapes around the house: the corners of a book, a can that rolls, a sandwich cut in half.

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • A triangle is closed and has 3 straight sides, whatever its size, color or turn
  • The corner of an index card makes a good square corner checker
  • Have a few solid blocks and pattern blocks on hand to check an answer
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.G.A.1 Separate the features that define a shape (three sides) from ones that do not (color, size, turn), and build or draw shapes with them.
  • 1.G.A.2 Combine flat shapes (such as trapezoids and half-circles) or solids (such as cubes and cones) into a new shape, then build more shapes from it.
  • 1.G.A.3 Split circles and rectangles into 2 or 4 equal parts, name them halves, fourths or quarters, and see that more parts means smaller parts.

1st Grade Shapes and Equal Shares Exit Tickets

1st Grade

Exit tickets for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on shapes and equal shares: one page a lesson, with the same ticket four times to copy and cut apart. Each ticket has two quick questions and ends with an "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves. Students count sides and corners, tell triangles from look-alikes, draw a shape from clues, find square corners, decide which solid shapes roll and stack, find the blocks in a build and put flat shapes together. Then they tell equal shares from unequal ones, cut shapes into halves and fourths, see that more shares make smaller shares and solve sharing stories. Answer keys for every ticket.
