Features

  • Six questions on what the unit builds on
  • Circle the name of a shape, and count the sides and corners of a triangle

  • Circle the shapes cut into equal shares, and cut a square into halves
  • A Score line, to sort the class before the unit
  • Answer key names the lesson each question leads into

Skills Covered

  • Name a flat shape
  • Count the sides and corners of a triangle
  • Tell solid shapes from flat ones
  • Can it roll? Can it stack?
  • Find shapes cut into equal shares
  • Cut a square into halves

How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on shapes and equal shares, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: naming a shape, counting sides and corners, telling solid shapes from flat ones, whether a sphere rolls and stacks, equal shares, and cutting a square into halves. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who mixes up flat and solid shapes needs real blocks in hand for the first lessons, and one who cannot yet count sides and corners needs to trace them with a finger. Equal shares are new to most students, so a miss there is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on shapes and equal shares starts: look for shapes around the house, count the corners of a book, and cut a sandwich into two equal halves together.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep pattern blocks and a few solid blocks out for a student who missed the shape questions
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
  • K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
  • K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
  • 1.G.A.1 Separate the features that define a shape (three sides) from ones that do not (color, size, turn), and build or draw shapes with them.
  • 1.G.A.3 Split circles and rectangles into 2 or 4 equal parts, name them halves, fourths or quarters, and see that more parts means smaller parts.
  • 2.G.A.1 Draw and spot shapes with given features, like a number of angles or faces, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.

1st Grade Shapes and Equal Shares Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on shapes and equal shares, on what the unit builds on. Students name a shape, count sides and corners, tell solid shapes from flat ones, decide whether a sphere rolls and stacks, find equal shares and cut a square in half.
