Features

  • Both forms ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Take away tens and count back by tens, and jump back on an open number line
  • Subtract the tens and the ones, and break apart the number you take away
  • Trade a ten with base-ten blocks and subtract in columns
  • Count up to subtract and check by adding, and decide who is right
  • Subtract from 100 and from tens, and find missing numbers
  • The last question (estimate to check a difference) is for the states that teach it in 2nd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

Seven pages for the 2nd grade unit on subtracting within 100. Page 1 is a pre-check to give before the unit, on what it builds on: subtraction facts, tens and ones, trading a ten, taking away tens and adding two-digit numbers. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day of the unit and see who can trade a ten for 10 ones. Do the review the day before the test, keeping base-ten blocks out. On the number line, blocks and checking questions, give the point for the right answer with the work shown. The keys show one way to break a number apart (27 as 20 and 7); any way that works is right, such as taking 4 to get to 60 and then 23. Question 12 (estimate to check) is taught in 2nd grade in some states: leave it out if your class does not learn it and score out of 11. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to check a subtraction by adding the answer to the number taken away.

Tips for Success

  • Keep base-ten blocks out for the review
  • Ask "Are there enough ones?" before every column problem
  • Have students check each answer by adding
  • Read the who is right question aloud and let students talk it through
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.B.4 Treat subtraction as finding a missing addend: to solve 12 - 9, ask what added to 9 makes 12.
  • 1.OA.D.8 Solve for the missing number in adding or subtracting equations like 9 + ? = 15 or ? - 4 = 6.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
