Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Take away tens and count back by tens, and jump back on an open number line
  • Subtract the tens and the ones, and break apart the number you take away
  • Trade a ten with base-ten blocks and subtract in columns
  • Count up to subtract and check by adding, and decide who is right
  • Subtract from 100 and from tens, and find missing numbers
  • The last question (estimate to check a difference) is for the states that teach it in 2nd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on subtracting within 100, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. The last one (estimate to check) is for the states that teach it. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, keeping base-ten blocks out. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. The keys show one way to break a number apart; any way that works is right. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to check a subtraction by adding the answer to the number taken away.

Tips for Success

  • Keep base-ten blocks out
  • Ask "Are there enough ones?" before every column problem
  • Have students check each answer by adding
  • Read the who is right question aloud and let students talk it through
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.B.4 Treat subtraction as finding a missing addend: to solve 12 - 9, ask what added to 9 makes 12.
  • 1.OA.D.8 Solve for the missing number in adding or subtracting equations like 9 + ? = 15 or ? - 4 = 6.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
