Four pages of stories with three-digit numbers. Page 1 asks students to think about a story before they solve it: more or less, which answer makes sense, which equation matches. Page 2 works one story with a bar model and an equation, then gives one to try. Page 3 moves the unknown to a part and uses a table for a two-step question. Page 4 has a story with an extra number, an answer to check and a story for students to write.
Read each story twice: first "What is happening?", then "What are the numbers about? What are we finding?" Draw the bar together before anyone writes an equation. The teacher notes list the mistakes to expect, such as adding every number in a story.
Read the story aloud with your child and ask what they are finding before they work anything out. A quick estimate afterwards ("is about 600 sensible?") is a good habit.

Word problems with three-digit addition, solved with bar models and equations, where the unknown can be the total or a part. Students decide what a story is asking before they solve, use a table, ignore numbers they do not need and check that an answer makes sense.
