Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: the unit's stories are built on these facts, sums and differences, so a student who misses the facts needs fact practice beside the unit, and one who misses the columns or the rounding needs them before the two-step stories and estimating to check an answer. Nothing on the page is a story yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
