One page to give on the first day of the unit on area, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: an array's rows and columns, cutting a rectangle into rows and columns of squares, adding the rows, coloring rows of squares on a grid, multiplication facts and missing factors. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet find an array's rows and columns needs square tiles in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses the facts needs fact practice beside the unit. Nothing on the page asks for area yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on area starts: build arrays with coins or cereal, and practice the multiplication facts that come up.

A check to give before the unit on area, on what the unit builds on. Students find the rows and columns of an array, cut a rectangle into rows of squares and add the rows, color rows of squares on a grid, and answer multiplication facts and missing factors.
