Skills Covered

  • A fact for an array and for equal groups

  • A fact family from three numbers
  • Missing numbers in × and ÷ facts

How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on the multiplication and division facts, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what Units 1 and 2 taught: a fact for an array and for equal groups, facts with 0, 2, 5 and 10, a fact family and missing numbers. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the 2s, 5s and 10s needs them first, since the unit's strategies start from those facts (double the 2s, five groups and one more, ten groups minus one), and one who cannot yet write a fact family needs counters to see how multiplying and dividing undo each other. The unit's harder facts are not on the page, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the facts unit starts: practice the 2s, 5s and 10s until they come quickly, since the harder facts are found from them.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • A student who misses the 2s, 5s and 10s needs them before the strategies
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.A.1 Understand a product as the total in equal groups, such as 4 × 6 meaning 4 groups with 6 in each.
  • 3.OA.A.4 Solve for the missing number in multiplying or dividing equations, such as 7 × ? = 42 or ? ÷ 3 = 6.
  • 3.OA.B.6 Treat division as finding a missing factor: solve 35 ÷ 5 by asking what times 5 equals 35.
  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide to 100 fluently with strategies, and by year's end instantly recall every product of two single-digit numbers.

3rd Grade Multiplication and Division Facts Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on the multiplication and division facts, on what the first two units taught. Students write facts for an array and for equal groups, multiply and divide with 0, 2, 5 and 10, write a fact family and find missing numbers.
