How to Use This Pack

Nine exit tickets, one for each lesson of the 3rd grade unit on data and line plots, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two quick questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Copy the tickets at 100% (actual size) so the rulers on ticket 12.6 measure true inches. Hand them out in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Ticket 12.8 (a survey in a frequency table) is for Florida, Indiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia, and ticket 12.9 (possible outcomes) for South Carolina. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Measure a few crayons to the nearest quarter inch, then make a line plot of the lengths.

Tips for Success

  • Look at the key or the scale before reading any graph
  • A half picture stands for half of what a whole picture stands for
  • A bar that stops between two lines is halfway between their numbers
  • Copy at actual size so the rulers measure true inches
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.B.3 Make picture and bar graphs where each symbol or square stands for several items, and answer one- and two-step comparison questions from them.
  • 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half or quarter inch and show the measurements on a line plot marked in wholes, halves or quarters.
